Sunrun to supply solar and batteries for SPAN's XFRA nodes in Texas homes
The September 23 expansion pairs a pre-paid solar, battery and smart-panel lease with a hosted GPU node in new-construction communities; the release names no node count or buyer, and SPAN's site specs a 16-GPU node with a 15 kWh battery.
Sunrun and SPAN announced on September 23, 2026 an expansion of their partnership under which, the release says, "Sunrun will provide home solar and battery storage to help power SPAN's XFRA distributed data center solution." The two companies "will partner with leading homebuilders and begin deployments in new construction residential communities in Texas and other specified markets"; the release names neither the builders nor the other markets. Each host customer "will receive a smart electrical panel paired with a multi-battery storage and solar system through a pre-paid lease," at "no cost to the builder or the homeowner, and without increasing the purchase price of the home," plus whole-home backup power and "ongoing compensation for hosting the XFRA compute node." The subhead promises "residential deployment at gigawatt scale"; the body gives no node count, no megawatts, no dollar figure and no compute buyer. Sunrun chief executive Mary Powell says in it that the expansion "puts customers first"; "Teaming up with Sunrun solves one of the main bottlenecks for distributed AI compute: power generation and transmission constraints," SPAN founder and chief executive Arch Rao says. The partnership is one the two companies were already running by October 29, 2021, when Sunrun said it had expanded it to include SPAN electrical panels in its solar and battery offerings in select markets.
XFRA is the product SPAN launched on April 13, 2026: "a distributed network of compute nodes located in residential and small commercial spaces," launching with "enterprise grade, liquid-cooled NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition GPUs" and NVIDIA among its initial launch partners. That release said that with initial deployments beginning later in 2026, SPAN "has developed a pipeline of deployment capacity to achieve gigawatt scale in 2027." SPAN's product site specs each XFRA Node, "purpose-built to be easily installed outdoors together with a SPAN Panel," at 16 NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition GPUs, 4 AMD Epyc CPUs, 3 TB of memory, a 35,000 BTU heat pump for liquid cooling and a 15 kWh battery the site lists for "Reliable power for node" and "home backup during power outages." The September release adds that the GPUs are "managed through SPAN's XFRA Secure Orchestration Layer, which intelligently schedules AI workloads based on latency requirements and real-time energy availability at each home," that Sunrun's systems "will maintain reliable electricity for both the homes and the XFRA compute nodes, while preventing the overloading of local distribution infrastructure," which the release says allows SPAN to maximize node deployment, and that Sunrun "will enroll the home batteries in its grid service programs," growing what the release calls its distributed power plant fleet. Sunrun and Tesla said in a joint release on September 21, 2026 that their home battery fleets dispatched more than 580 MW in California's September 9 heat wave, 517 MW of it from Tesla Powerwalls.
The figures on the record
Sunrun's second-quarter results, released August 5, 2026, count 1,205,613 customers as of June 30, 2026 and say the company "has installed more than 266,000 storage and solar systems, representing approximately 4.6 Gigawatt hours of Networked Storage Capacity," an energy figure (kW vs kWh) beside the power figures below, with a storage attachment rate of 74% in the quarter. The same release says storage capacity installed in the quarter was 332 megawatt hours, a 15% decrease from the second quarter of 2025, and subscriber additions were 19,793, a 31% decrease. Under the release's bullet "Positioning Our Distributed Fleet to Serve AI and Data Center Demand," it says: "In July 2026, we launched a distributed AI data center pilot, which places compute nodes in homes with Sunrun solar and storage systems."
That July 8 release described the pilot as following "a successful proof of concept that demonstrated revenue generation and high demand for distributed compute," placing "numerous compute nodes in homes equipped with Sunrun solar and battery storage systems," and said Sunrun expected to complete the pilot in the months after July 8 and would assess results "against defined milestones, compute performance, and homeowner experience" before determining "the scale, speed and customer offering of a broader rollout." It did not name SPAN or any hardware partner, and it already said participating homeowners are compensated for hosting the nodes. The September release does not say whether that pilot has concluded or what it found.
SPAN's own figures surfaced in April in Latitude Media's reporting rather than in the release. Rao told Latitude that a 100-megawatt data center takes three to five years to build at "upwards of $15 million per MW," and that SPAN could supply the same compute by installing the XFRA Node at 8,000 new homes in roughly six months at $3 million per MW. In its own voice, Latitude reported that an XFRA pilot was expected in 2026 in 100 newly constructed homes, about 1.25 MW of compute across 1,600 liquid-cooled inference GPUs, which is 16 per home by The Duck Curve's division, the node count on SPAN's site. Rao's premise, in his words: "the existing distribution network operates at only 40 to 45% utilization, nominally."
What has changed since April
The April version, as Latitude Media reported it, had installation free and the homeowner paying "a $150 monthly fee that covers energy and internet," at a discount to typical costs; SPAN's April release listed homeowner benefits as "a premium SPAN Panel, battery backup, and optional solar plus fixed, discounted rates for electricity and internet," and quoted PulteGroup as a homebuilder accelerating the initial rollout. The September release's Sunrun arrangement makes solar part of the package rather than optional and puts the panel, batteries and solar on a pre-paid lease. It adds hosting compensation without saying what became of the fee, and SPAN's site still lists "Discounted electricity, high-speed internet, SPAN Energy Intelligence, and home backup" as host benefits. Neither document gives a dollar figure for the compensation.
The stage of the new-construction work is stated on that site, read September 27, 2026: SPAN "is currently working directly with residential new construction builders in the US only for our first 100-home XFRA proof of concept," and "We plan to expand more broadly in 2027," with details of any broader test program or pilot to be shared there. The September release does not say whether the Texas communities are inside that first 100 homes or beyond them.
The September release is the fourth entry since June 24 on Sunrun's press-release index whose title names data centers, AI hyperscalers or edge computing, after the June 24 letter of intent with Renew Home and Tesla for "More Than 16 Gigawatts of Fast, Flexible Power for Data Centers and Large Loads," which the second-quarter release calls "a non-binding letter of intent," the July 8 pilot, and the August 17 Voltus agreement, which named no megawatts either. The June and August agreements sell the batteries' flexibility to loads elsewhere; the July pilot put compute nodes into existing customers' homes, and this deal puts them into homes not yet built.
