MGE Energy buys into Realta Fusion to explore 200-MWe Wisconsin plant

The Madison utility's parent took an equity stake of undisclosed size, and MGE will lend engineering, siting, and interconnection help; Realta's CEO told WPR the mid-2030s is a reasonable target.

Realta Fusion and Madison Gas and Electric (MGE) announced a strategic partnership on September 2, 2026 to explore joint development of a 200-megawatt-electric (MWe) fusion power plant in Wisconsin, according to Realta's release. MGE's parent company, MGE Energy, Inc., made a direct equity investment in Realta as the first phase of the partnership, and the utility agreed to provide equipment, engineering, and technical support plus help with siting, permitting, interconnection, and financing for the anticipated plant. Neither company disclosed the size of the stake.

Both companies describe the plant as something to explore, and the timelines on offer are long. Realta CEO Kieran Furlong told Wisconsin Public Radio that the company views the mid-2030s as a reasonable target for a fusion plant in Wisconsin, that it hopes to commercialize its technology by the early 2030s, and that 200 MW is the minimum size it would target. Per WPR, Furlong called the investment "meaningful" for both sides, but the financial terms were not made available. MGE Energy is listed on Nasdaq and had not filed a Form 8-K on the investment as of September 2; its most recent current report, filed August 21, 2026, announced a dividend increase.

"Our agreement with MGE to explore the opportunity to build out a fusion power plant is a clear signal that fusion's time is coming," Furlong said in the release. MGE Chairman, President, and CEO Jeff Keebler said in the same release that the collaboration reflects a commitment to exploring technologies that could deliver around-the-clock carbon-free electricity.

What the utility brings is the part of a power plant that has nothing to do with plasma. Brad Alexejun, MGE's economic development manager, told WPR that MGE builds plants and operates the grid, areas where Realta lacks expertise, and that the timeline depends on when Realta's technology is ready. He said a nuclear energy siting study that the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin and the University of Wisconsin–Madison are conducting would inform where a plant might be located, though the partners would weigh other factors as well. That study is mandated by 2025 Wisconsin Act 12, is led by UW–Madison professor Paul Wilson, and by its own description covers fusion as well as fission.

Realta is one of the eight companies the Department of Energy selected on May 31, 2023 for its Milestone-Based Fusion Development Program, per the Fusion Industry Association's list of the awardees. The company operates the Wisconsin HTS Axisymmetric Mirror (WHAM) experiment at UW–Madison's Physical Sciences Laboratory. On June 19, 2026 it demonstrated direct energy conversion on WHAM, drawing multiple amps at around 100 volts, enough to light several bulbs; chief scientific officer Derek Sutherland said in that release that "this is not yet a demonstration of net-electricity or a large-scale conversion of fusion power directly into electricity." The distance from those bulbs to 200 MWe is the whole development program.

The partnership lands on a state incentive stack. On July 15, 2026 Realta announced up to $55 million from the state of Wisconsin and the City of Madison toward its headquarters and research facility, The Realta Forge, at OM Station, the former Oscar Mayer plant site: an estimated $37.5 million in state sales and use tax exemptions, up to $15 million in performance-based enterprise zone tax credits from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC), and $2.8 million in tax increment financing from the city. Realta said it expects over 600 jobs there and a groundbreaking before the end of 2026, after which it will begin building a prototype mirror machine it calls Hammir. The sales-tax piece rests on 2025 Wisconsin Act 165, enacted April 2, 2026, which exempts tangible personal property "exclusively and directly used for a nuclear fusion technology project" and used solely at the project's location; the exemption does not apply after December 31, 2076.

The Forge sits in MGE's service territory. WPR reports that MGE will serve it, and Furlong told WPR that Realta will be a major energy user while it develops the technology. For some years, then, the electricity in this relationship flows from the utility to the fusion company.

MGE's own motive is a carbon goal. The release says MGE committed in 2019 to net-zero carbon electricity by 2050, and MGE Energy's net-zero page says the company committed in early 2022 to cutting carbon emissions at least 80 percent by 2030 from 2005 levels. Other Milestone awardees have found utility partners in different shapes: Type One Energy's Project Infinity is sited at the Tennessee Valley Authority's retired Bull Run coal plant, where Tennessee issued a fusion-specific license on August 31, 2026. MGE's version puts the parent of a 170,000-customer utility on the developer's shareholder list before there is a design to license.

Outlook

Siting is the first thing the partnership needs that neither company controls. Alexejun told WPR the state siting study will inform where a plant goes, and the study's page says it will evaluate siting opportunities and outline regulatory approval processes. If it reports before Realta has a plant design, it becomes the map the partners start from.

Ownership is the second. Furlong told WPR the partnership could pave the way for other utilities to invest, and MGE's existing generation, including a coal plant in Columbia County, is co-owned with We Energies, Wisconsin Public Service, and Alliant Energy, per WPR. A 200-MWe unit is more likely to follow that pattern than to sit on one 170,000-customer utility's balance sheet, if it is built at all.

The near-term tests are Realta's: a Forge groundbreaking before the end of 2026, as the July 15 release projected, and progress on Hammir. The June 2026 result lit bulbs; the mid-2030s target Furlong gave WPR assumes everything in between goes to plan.
