Baltic Power, Poland's first offshore wind farm, installs all 76 turbines
More than a third of the 15 MW Vestas turbines are already generating, Northland says, and the ORLEN-Northland project is on track for commercial operations in 2026.
All 76 turbines are now installed at Baltic Power, Poland's first offshore wind farm, and over one-third of them are already generating power. Northland Power announced the milestone on October 7, 2026 for the 1.1 GW project it owns with ORLEN, adding that it is advancing through commissioning and "is on track for commercial operations in 2026, with costs aligned with original expectations."
The last stretch went quickly. When the farm delivered first power on July 10, 2026, Northland counted 54 of the 76 turbines installed and said the project was on track for commercial operations in the second half of 2026. The remaining 22 were installed between the two releases, which are 89 days apart by our arithmetic. Each is a 15 MW Vestas machine; the July release puts ownership at 51% ORLEN and 49% Northland, and the site about 23 kilometres off the coast near Choczewo and Łeba.
Once finished, the farm should supply roughly 3% of Poland's current electricity demand, a share both companies give. Northland expects about 4 TWh a year, enough for more than 1.5 million Polish households; Baltic Power's own October 7 release says "up to 4TWh" without stating a period. (The gap between 1.1 GW of capacity and 4 TWh of annual output is the usual one between power and energy.)
The two releases part ways on the basics. Baltic Power calls the farm "up to 1,2 GW" where Northland says 1.1 GW; 76 turbines at 15 MW each come to 1,140 MW by our arithmetic, which matches Northland's 1.1 GW, and Baltic Power's release does not say what its higher figure counts. Northland's October release places the farm approximately 20 kilometres offshore, while Baltic Power's release and Northland's own July release say about 23 km. The farm has not moved.
A third of an unfinished farm can already sell electricity because the turbines are commissioned string by string, as their inter-array cables and substations are ready, then run a 240-hour trial before handover to the operations team, per Baltic Power. Baltic Power says that under national regulations, a unit in commissioning that does not yet hold a generation licence may sell its output on the energy markets under a special, time-limited licence. What remains is commissioning and permitting at scale: Jens Poulsen, Baltic Power's senior project director, said "almost 2500 assets need to undergo mandatory inspection, obtain certification and permits for use."
Some of the hardware is Polish too. Over a third of the nacelles came from Vestas's factory in Szczecin, per Baltic Power, and the project says it was the first in the world to use sustainably sourced steel in its turbine towers, about 15% of the tower steel. Cadeler was the main provider of installation vessels, working two jack-ups.
Once the farm is operating, its revenue rests on a 25-year contract for difference that Poland's Energy Regulatory Office granted in 2021, according to Northland's July release; none of the three company releases gives the contract price. What is public is the ceiling: a regulation the climate minister signed on March 30, 2021 capped the price the regulator could award first-phase offshore projects at PLN 319.6/MWh, raised from PLN 301.5 in the draft after public consultations. The ministry said the cap reflected the investment and operating costs of a wind farm 55 km from shore, along with 2021 fixed prices, higher balancing costs, the fee for extending the location permit and property tax on onshore infrastructure.
The offshore wind act assumes 5.9 GW of installed capacity, which the ministry said matches the 2030 offshore wind figure in Poland's energy policy to 2040. Baltic Power is the first Polish offshore farm to put electricity on the national grid.
For Northland, the farm is the biggest piece of a Polish build-out: the October release says the company is also constructing two grid-scale battery projects in Poland totalling 300 MW / 1.2 GWh. The release came eight days after Northland's 80 MW Jurassic battery reached commercial operation in Alberta. Northland has company in Polish storage: ENGIE assembled a 758 MW / 2,156 MWh Polish storage portfolio in July and August 2026. Once Baltic Power is operational, Northland's July release says, the company's gross installed offshore wind capacity rises from approximately 1.2 GW to 2.3 GW.
