ENGIE's storage fleet reaches 10.7 GW operating or under construction
The company added 1.1 GW / 3.3 GWh of European battery projects in July and August 2026, about four-fifths of it not yet under construction and scheduled for commissioning in 2028 and 2029.
ENGIE's portfolio of energy storage in operation and under construction has reached 10.7 GW worldwide, the company said on September 4, 2026, after July and August added 1.1 GW / 3.3 GWh of battery projects across seven European countries. The 10.7 GW counts battery systems and pumped-storage hydropower together, with 4.7 GW in Europe and 4.4 GW in the United States, and the release ties it to ENGIE's ambition of 95 GW of installed renewable and storage capacity by 2030.
Poland is the largest single move. The release says ENGIE established its first positions in the Polish storage segment in July and August and now holds a 758 MW / 2,156 MWh portfolio there. The centerpiece is the ready-to-build Tursko Wielkie project (250 MW / 1,000 MWh) in Osiek, Staszów County, paired with an adjacent 70 MW / 280 MWh development to form a single 320 MW / 1,280 MWh facility; a further 438 MW / 876 MWh acquisition in the Łódź region completes the set. The release schedules all of it for commissioning between 2028 and 2029 and says the projects connect directly to substations, "optimizing energy flows and easing congestion on the regional network."
Enerdata's July 3, 2026 account of ENGIE Zielona Energia's June 26, 2026 release adds detail the September release leaves out: Tursko Wielkie was bought from the Polish developer R.Power, construction is expected to start in early 2027 with commissioning in the fourth quarter of 2028, and the plant will connect to the Połaniec substation in south-eastern Poland.
In Romania, ENGIE acquired a ready-to-build 54 MW / 216 MWh project in Călan, Hunedoara County, for 2029, adding to 85 MW / 170 MWh the release says is already under construction there. In Spain it acquired a 66 MW / 264 MWh asset in Tarifa, for 2029, next to the 200 MW / 800 MWh Tarifa development already under way. Construction has started on a 74 MW / 296 MWh battery at Coo in Belgium's Liège province for early 2028, and two 10 MW / 45 MWh systems are being built at the Rallo and Mourisca wind farms in Portugal for 2027. On the operating side, ENGIE's first two UK batteries, at Cathkin near East Kilbride and Broxburn west of Edinburgh, came online with a combined 100 MW / 200 MWh, and the 35 MW / 100 MWh BESS Maxima in Lelystad, inaugurated on June 30, 2026, is described in the release as ENGIE's first battery in the Netherlands and "the largest battery storage system in operation in the country."
Read against its own commissioning dates, the summer tally is mostly future tense: by The Duck Curve's addition of the seven entries, about 880 MW, roughly four-fifths of the 1.1 GW, is projects acquired or advanced in development for 2028 and 2029, 94 MW is under construction, and 135 MW was operating at publication.
The September figures update an April 7, 2026 release in which ENGIE said it had more than 1 GW of battery capacity in Europe: 700 MW in operation or under construction, plus newly announced acquisitions of 278 MW / 1.1 GWh of Spanish projects at Álora and Tarifa and the 110 MW / 220 MWh Castelnau d'Aude battery it had just started building in France. That April count covered batteries only; the September figure of 4.7 GW for Europe includes pumped-storage hydropower, so the two are not comparable. ENGIE's first-half results, published July 31, 2026, put installed renewables and battery capacity at 59.5 GW at the end of June with 6.4 GW under construction, leaving 35.5 GW to add between mid-2026 and 2030 to reach the 95 GW target.
The Polish portfolio lands in a market that made capacity payments a thinner revenue line for batteries in December 2025. ESS News reported on December 30, 2025 that PSE's preliminary results for the capacity market auction covering the 2030 delivery year awarded about 685 MW of capacity obligations to battery projects after the availability correction factor applied to batteries was cut to 13.39% from about 60% in 2024 and 95% in 2023. ESS News estimated the physical battery capacity behind those obligations at roughly 5.1 GW and wrote that projects will therefore rely more heavily on energy arbitrage and ancillary services.
Equinor, another European major, started merchant operations at its 100 MW / 200 MWh Citrus Flatts battery in ERCOT on September 3, 2026; ENGIE's release gives its US storage total as 4.4 GW but names no US project.
Outlook
The release's own dates put most of the summer's 1.1 GW online in 2028 and 2029, so the near-term change to ENGIE's operating fleet is the 135 MW in Scotland and Lelystad. If Tursko Wielkie breaks ground in early 2027 as Enerdata's account states, it will be built for a capacity market that, on ESS News's reading of the 2030 auction, lets a battery contract 13.4 MW of obligation per 100 MW built; the substation and congestion framing in the September release reads to us as a project pitched on power flows and arbitrage rather than capacity revenue. The 95 GW figure is an installed-capacity target, and ready-to-build acquisitions add to a portfolio "in operation and under construction" faster than they add installed megawatts; ENGIE's full-year 2026 results would be the next checkpoint.
