Hams Hall battery goes commercial as Return lands €835m for Germany
The EBRD and RBI lend €60 million for a 246 MW Bulgarian battery, Masdar and Endesa start 120 MWh in Spain, and Norway's NBIM pays $300 million for 10% of Aypa Power.
Announcements in the first week of November 2026 caught Europe's grid batteries at every stage: debt for a German portfolio still under construction, a development-bank loan in Bulgaria, a groundbreaking in Spain and a switch-on in England, plus a Norwegian state investor buying into a North American battery platform. Rabobank turns up twice, as a lender to the English battery and as an underwriter of the German facility.
Hams Hall starts commercial operation at 350 MW / 1,243 MWh
BW ESS has put the first phase of its Hams Hall battery in the West Midlands into commercial operation, bringing 350 MW / 1,243 MWh online beside National Grid's Hams Hall substation, the company said on November 2. BW ESS calls it the largest battery in Europe by storage capacity, a ranking by MWh rather than MW (power versus energy). It reached commercial operation 20 days after energisation, with Sungrow, Energy-IO, National Grid and NESO among the partners named. A second phase takes the site to 400 MW / 1,424 MWh.
The revenue and the debt were lined up first. A 10-year floor and optimisation agreement with EDF underpins long-term revenues, and the debt comes from OCBC, Rabobank and Societe Generale, which BW ESS said on October 22 would provide it in equal proportions, with the transaction expected to close at the commercial operations date. Hams Hall belongs to BW ESS's 2.6 GWh Ardenham portfolio, co-owned with AIP Management.
Return lands an €835 million facility for German batteries
Amsterdam-based Return has secured an €835 million portfolio financing underwritten by Deutsche Bank and Rabobank to expand battery storage in Germany, it said on November 4. (ESG Today's $936 million headline is the same deal in dollars.) The €835 million is the size of the framework, not the bill for what it covers so far: three projects under construction with a combined 117 MW, with more projects to be added in the near future and during 2027. The release gives no storage duration for the three; its household comparison assumes four-hour batteries.
The structure is the point Return is selling. Battery projects are usually financed one at a time, and this framework lets eligible projects join without restarting the process, feeding capacity into what Return calls its Virtual Flexibility Portfolio, which sells flexibility to customers such as ENGIE (400 MW contracted) and Centrica Energy (100 MW). Return aims to install at least 1 GW a year in Germany from 2027, which it puts at €750 million to €1.2 billion of annual investment, subject to market conditions.
EBRD and RBI lend €60 million for a 246 MW battery in Bulgaria
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is lending €30 million to Tenevo Solar Technologies for a 246 MW / 512.5 MWh battery in south-eastern Bulgaria, alongside €30 million in parallel funding from Raiffeisen Bank International, the EBRD said on November 2. The battery will sit beside an existing 242 MWp solar plant, which the EBRD and RBI also financed, and a 65 MW / 260 MWh battery. The newcomer is the shorter of the two: by our arithmetic, nearly four times the power of its neighbour and under twice the energy.
Debt carries most of the bill: total project cost is €72 million, per the EBRD's project summary, against the banks' €60 million. Hithium is the named battery supplier, through EPC contractor SolarPro, and Tenevo Solar is a 50:50 joint venture of Renalfa IPP and Eurowind Energy. The bank puts Bulgaria's battery storage capacity above 6.2 GW / 19 GWh, citing latest estimates.
Masdar and Endesa start 120 MWh at three Spanish solar plants
Masdar and Endesa have started building three batteries at existing solar plants in Spain, adding 60.16 MW and 120.34 MWh for a combined €25.2 million, Masdar said on November 5. Ardila, at the solar plants in Fregenal de la Sierra (Badajoz), takes 36.10 MW / 72.20 MWh; La Vega I and La Vega II, at two plants in Teba (Málaga), take 12.03 MW / 24.07 MWh each. All three use lithium iron phosphate batteries with grid-forming inverters and are expected to be operational by the end of 2027.
They are the first storage projects under the partnership the two formed in 2024, when Masdar bought a stake in a portfolio of Endesa's solar assets. The release's own summary line calls them the first storage projects "delivered" under that partnership, on the day construction began.
Norway's NBIM pays $300 million for 10% of Aypa Power
Norges Bank Investment Management, the fund management division of Norway's central bank, has bought a direct 10% interest in Aypa Power, a North American battery storage platform, for $300 million, co-investing alongside Brookfield, NBIM said on November 4. The agreement was signed and completed on October 28; Brookfield agreed in July 2026 to buy Aypa from funds managed by Blackstone Energy Transition Partners. Aypa has about 6.5 GW of operating, under-construction and contracted storage in the United States and Canada and a development pipeline of more than 20 GW.
"This is our first dedicated investment in battery storage," said Harald von Heyden, NBIM's global head of energy and infrastructure. It is also NBIM's second route into the same company: it already held an indirect investment in Aypa through Brookfield's Global Transition Fund strategy.
