DARPA backs a Kilopower test, Taiwan's NTHU signs with NuCube
Space Nuclear Power Corporation said on October 21, 2026 that DARPA awarded it an agreement for a Kilopower ground test with active control rods, a step past the passively controlled 2018 KRUSTY test. Taiwan's National Tsing Hua University signed a microreactor feasibility agreement with NuCube on October 19, NANO Nuclear hired IMPSA for a KRONOS design review expected to include a check against ASME Section III, and Stiesdal said on October 22 that its 6.5 MW electrolyser is in commercial operation at Måde, Denmark.
EU picks 77 net-zero projects, Alaska backs NuCube, ITM's record year
The European Commission selected 77 projects for €3.4 billion of Innovation Fund support on October 19, 2026, among them €20.2 million for Minesto's tidal kite array and a heat-only small modular reactor. The same day, Alaska's AIDEA agreed to invest $25 million in microreactor developer NuCube, and ITM Power reported revenue up 68% to £43.6 million for the year to April 2026.
Hy24 to buy Hynamics, Nel's alkaline slump, Finland certifies e-methane
Hy24 has agreed to buy EDF's hydrogen unit Hynamics, with closing possible in the first quarter of 2027, and Nel ASA's alkaline electrolyser revenue fell 91% to NOK 23 million in the third quarter of 2026. Gasgrid Finland issued the country's first e-methane guarantees of origin, Intilion's chief executive said it intends to realize up to 3 GWh of storage projects using CATL sodium-ion batteries in Germany, Austria and Switzerland over five years, and Energy China says it completed the first commercial ship-to-ship green ammonia bunkering.
ADB and Japan finance AM Green's Kakinada green ammonia plant
The Asian Development Bank and Japan signed financing for AM Green's conversion of a gas-fed ammonia and urea plant in Kakinada, India, which ADB says will make about 1.1 million tons a year of renewable ammonia; the package, the first under ACCEL, includes a $100 million LEAP 2 loan. Uniper expects a first shipment as early as 2028, and first deliveries to Germany under H2Global are expected in 2029.
ITM's Hydropulse signs heads of terms for 150 MW refinery hydrogen plant
ITM Power said on October 12, 2026 that its build-own-operate subsidiary Hydropulse has signed heads of terms with an unnamed European oil refinery for a 150 MW green hydrogen plant under a 10-year agreement. ITM says the project would be its largest commercial commitment to date if it progresses to definitive agreements; a final investment decision is targeted for 2027.
DICP's 250-kW system co-produces hydrogen and fresh water from seawater
A Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics team reports in Nature Energy, published September 15, 2026, a 250-kW system that couples alkaline water electrolysis with low-temperature seawater distillation driven by the electrolyser's waste heat: 48 Nm³/h of hydrogen and 31.6 kg/h of fresh water, with a 14.4% improvement in system electrical efficiency relative to alkaline electrolysis of fresh water alone, per the abstract. The institute's September 16 release says the 250-kW unit was completed in August 2024 and has run stably for more than 40 days.
